Music Program
Northside has an integrated music program written and coordinated for the
Pre-Primary and Primary classes. Musical education is provided on both
campuses appropriate to each class as set out in our curriculum.
Music theory, music from other countries, history, analysis and composition
are introduced progressively as the children advance through the school.
Pre-primary / Early Primary
Develop the children's sense of pitch and rhythm with clapping, movement
and musical games.
Identify sounds, rhythmic patterns and focus on in-tune singing.
Build up a repertoire of songs that incorporate percussion instruments.
Introduce children to orchestra instruments.
Primary
Music theory.
Study music from other countries.
History and analysis of music studied.
Listening, performing and composing using a graphics score.
Prepare and perform pieces with multiple parts including singing, percussion and musical instruments.
The glockenspiel is the school's chosen musical instrument for general study, as discussed below.
Glockenspiel
Introduced to all students on entry to primary school.
Students learn to read music.
Instructions from beginners to advanced levels integrated in the music
curriculum.
Study rhythms, terms and musical notation.
Study of the history of pieces and composers.
School Orchestra
The school orchestra is open to all students in Primary school.
The orchestra's composition varies depending upon the students
currently enrolled and their chosen instruments, at present it consists of: 2
flutes, 3 violins, 1 guitar, 1 clarinet, 1 cello, 12 glockenspiels, 4
keyboards, 1 piano, 2 percussion, 2 drums, 1 tuned bells and 1 harp ranging in competency from beginner to advanced.
Practise is held at the school on Thursday from 8.00am to 9.00am.
Pieces studied range from popular to classical and in-between, and at
present include: Yellow Submarine, Chopsticks, Going Home and
La Cumparsita.
Along with playing at several school events, this year we are hoping to perform 2 Baby Proms and perform at the school's End of Year Concert.
There is an additional cost for participation in Orchestra, which is
presently $5.00 per week, payable to the Coordinator at the commencement of each term.
School Choir
The school choir is open to all students in Primary school.
In choir, the children learn to sing confidently, both independently
and within the group. They are taught to hold harmonies and are
exposed to different styles of music, including jazz and improvisation.
The objective of choir is to instil and nurture a love of singing.

There is an additional cost for participation in Choir, which is
presently $5.00 per week, payable to the Coordinator at the commencement of
each term.
Musical Soiree
Once each term during terms 1 to 3, we hold a Musical Soiree at
Northside, where children of different abilities and ages come tup and
perform an item. This ranges from dancing to singing to instrumental
groups. The children are strongly encouraged to arrange their own
items.
The dates for the Musical Soirees for 2007 are:
Term 1: Friday April 4.
Musical Events
Musica Viva will once again be attending our school for two
great concerts in the second half of the year.
Drum Beats will be attending the school to perform drumming
workshops in Term 3.
Throughout the year, guest parents will be attending the school to
demonstrate their skills on various instruments.
