Northside has an integrated music program written and coordinated for the Pre-Primary and Primary classes.  Musical education is provided on both campuses appropriate to each class as set out in our curriculum.

Music theory, music from other countries, history, analysis and composition are introduced progressively as the children advance through the school.

Pre-primary / Early Primary
  • Develop the children's sense of pitch and rhythm with clapping, movement and musical games.

  • Identify sounds, rhythmic patterns and focus on in-tune singing.

  • Build up a repertoire of songs that incorporate percussion instruments.

  • Introduce children to orchestra instruments.

Primary
  • Music theory.

  • Study music from other countries.

  • History and analysis of music studied.

  • Listening, performing and composing using a graphics score.

  • Prepare and perform pieces with multiple parts including singing, percussion and musical instruments.

  • The glockenspiel is the school's chosen musical instrument for general study, as discussed below.

Glockenspiel
  • Introduced to all students on entry to primary school.

  • Students learn to read music.

  • Instructions from beginners to advanced levels integrated in the music curriculum.

  • The orchestra's composition varies depending upon the students currently enrolled and their chosen instruments, at present it consists of: 2 flutes, 3 violins, 1 guitar, 1 clarinet, 1 cello, 12 glockenspiels, 4 keyboards, 1 piano, 2 percussion, 2 drums, 1 tuned bells and 1 harp ranging in competency from beginner to advanced.

  • There is an additional cost for participation in Orchestra, which is presently $5.00 per week, payable to the Coordinator at the commencement of each term.

School Choir

  • The school choir is open to all students in Primary school.

  • In choir, the children learn to sing confidently, both independently and within the group.  They are taught to hold harmonies and are exposed to different styles of music, including jazz and improvisation.  The objective of choir is to instil and nurture a love of singing.

  • There is an additional cost for participation in Choir, which is presently $5.00 per week, payable to the Coordinator at the commencement of each term.

Musical Soiree

  • Once each term during terms 1 to 3, we hold a Musical Soiree at Northside, where children of different abilities and ages come tup and perform an item.  This ranges from dancing to singing to instrumental groups.  The children are strongly encouraged to arrange their own items.
