Excursion Program
Excursions are an important part of the Montessori philosophy of "going out". For this reason, we aim to include two excursions per term,
ideally related to the main focus of the work being undertaken in each class.
When the child goes out, it is the world itself that offers itself to him. Let us take the child out to show him real things instead
of making objects which represent ideas and closing them in cupboards.
-Maria Montessori, From Childhood to Adolescence
Dr Montessori believed that as far as was practicable, excursions should be made in public transport. In this way the students are taking part in real life:
|
* choosing suitable clothes
* packing a bag
* reading a train timetable
* following a map
* learning to cope with crowds
|
* using pedestrian crossings
* reading street signs
* following instructions
* moving as a group
|
This involves the child in many activities and experiences even before they reach their excursion destination!
Buses, fitted with seatbelts, are hired when it is not feasible to use public transport.
Groups are also invited into the school to work with the children. In the past, these have included the CSIRO,
Musica Viva, Animal Farm, theatre groups and aboriginal dancers.
Annual 9-12 Class Camp
Each year, all students in the 9-12 class have the opportunity to join the
school camp, which is run in conjunction with the Forestville Montessori
School's 9-12 class. The camp is usually for a full week and has a theme
which is related in some way to the student's studies, but is also designed to
encourage self reliance and peer support.
