Homework
Homework is not given in the child's early years of Montessori primary
education at Northside, but is gradually introduced to the children in the 9-12
class during level 5. This is a preparation for home study in secondary school
and beyond. It is used primarily to promote independent work habits and to
practise study skills which are being established.

Assessment & Exams
Children are assessed by a variety of means. By classroom and
playground observation, both by Directresses and other staff members; by
in-house developed assessment techniques relevant to the Montessori curriculum
and by using conventional
assessment tools.
Progress and development of the child in all aspects is discussed with parents at the
formal interviews held twice a year. These interviews are compulsory and
usually of fifteen minutes duration.
Northside also takes part in the Basic
Skills Testing Program for Years 3 and 5 that is administered by the Department of Education.
Preparation for High School Entrance
In addition, children are prepared for selective and private school entry
examinations during the final year of school. In fact many of the school's
graduates successfully complete these examinations and qualify for entry to
these schools.
Since the primary years are viewed as an integral six-year phase, preparation
for entrance examinations is only undertaken in the final year of primary
school, and exam preparation is not provided for at earlier times in the cycle.
